When Should You Send Your Wedding Invitations?

One of the questions I hear all the time on social media and at wedding fairs is:

“When should I send my wedding invitations?”

As a stationer, my advice is simple: send your invitations 10–12 months before your wedding day whenever possible.

Traditionally, many people wait until a few months before the wedding, but life has changed. Guests often have busy calendars and make plans much further in advance than they used to.

Think about everything people book ahead of time:

- Holidays

- Concerts and festivals

- Family events

- Weekends away

- Nights out and celebrations

By sending your invitations early, you’re giving your loved ones the best possible chance of being there to celebrate with you.

It’s also worth remembering that not everyone works a typical Monday-to-Friday, 9-to-5 schedule. Many guests need to request annual leave months in advance, especially if they work shifts or in industries with limited holiday availability.

If you have family or friends travelling from further away, early invitations can make a huge difference. They’ll have more time to budget for accommodation, book transport, and spread the cost over several months—something many people appreciate, particularly with the rising cost of living.

An added bonus? It makes life easier for you too. With guests receiving their invitations earlier, there’s often less last-minute chasing and fewer stressful decisions as your wedding day approaches.

Planning ahead creates a smoother experience for everyone involved and helps ensure your guests can be there to share one of the most important days of your life.

So, if you’re wondering when to pop those invitations in the post, my recommendation is clear: aim for 10–12 months in advance and give everyone—including yourself—the gift of time.
